The 18th IEFT tour will begin in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey. Ankara has many universities and is a classic student town. IEFT has long enjoyed very successful fairs in Ankara with both large numbers of students and great student potential and quality. In Ankara, IEFT hosts our customary networking reception in the Sheraton Hotel – catching up with old friends and making important contacts is a great way to kick off the tour!
After Ankara we travel to beautiful coastal city of Izmir will bring you to a typical Aegean seaside city with an easy atmosphere and warm weather. Izmir is a progressive and modern Turkish city and is surrounded by historically important destinations and must see towns: Bodrum, Cesme, Kusadasý, Manisa, Denizli, and Aydin. In this region there are 7 universities with thousands of students. Prior to the exhibition, IEFT organizes an optional tour of Ephesus and the Virgin Mary House, two not-to-be missed sights! Izmir also hosts the traditional IEFT sponsored fish dinner in one of the famous fish restaurants along the coastal boardwalk.
After Izmir we travel to Bursa, located southeast of the Sea of Marmara on the lower slopes of Uludag. Many important Ottoman buildings remain here. Bursa is rich in thermal springs, most of which are in the Cekirge area. Visit Yesil Turbe, which consists of a mosque, a medrese, a turbe and an imaret. The medrese today is a museum of Turkish and Islamic arts. Across the street is the Yesil Mosque with a style mostly seen during the first years of the Ottoman Empire. Ulucami was the Great Mosque of Bursa and the first congregational mosque built by the Ottomans. Like many other buildings in Bursa, Ulucami also underwent many restorations due to earthquakes and fires. The features which give the mosque the quality of a calligraphy museum are the beautiful hand writings dating from the 19th Century Liberation.
From Bursa we travel north for the two-day exhibition in Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey (5th largest in the world!) and the only city on the globe to span two continents. Istanbul is the centre of business, entertainment, culture, education, history, culinary delights and is the busiest fair city with thousands of serious students flocking to the IEFT exhibition to meet international school representatives. Istanbul and its surrounding regions has over 40 universities and 350 high schools and is a must on the IEFT Fair circuit. IEFT organizes city tours as well as and unforgettable IEFT sponsored evening dinner cruise on the Bosphorus where you can enjoy Istanbul by moonlight, delicious food, drinks and even traditional belly dancing!
After Istanbul, we travel to Kayseri, historically one of the most important trade centre in Anatolia. Located in centre right of the country, it has the feel of a modern, busy city but also has a strong traditional and religious atmosphere. The setting is spectacular, with the mountains of Erciyes Dagi and Kara Dagi in the background, a snow-capped volcano and green fields, and the nearby Sultansazligi bird sanctuary. The city is also well known for its textile and carpet industry, and has impressive monuments that reflect its history. Kayseri has always been a popular option as a base to explore Cappadocia. Erciyes University is a Turkish institute of higher education located in Kayseri. As of 4 April 2006, a total of 28,474 students are studying for their bachelors degree and postgraduate studies.
After Kayseri, we travel to Antalya, otherwise known as the Turkish Riviera and is the most stunning part of Turkey's Mediterranean coast. It is typical of Turkey, a thriving modern city, with a historic heart in the centre of Kaleiçi within the old city walls. This area has seen something of a renaissance in recent years, with many of the wooden Ottoman mansions being restored and turned into boutique hotels. No cars are allowed in the narrow streets of the old town so it is a good place to soak up the atmosphere around the charming harbour. The symbol of Antalya is the fluted minaret or Yivli Minare built by the Seljuks in the 13th century. There are plenty of interesting pieces in the Archaeological Museum, from the Palaeolithic Age right through to Ottoman times. Akdeniz University is a campus university between Antalya and Alanya. It is the leading higher education and scientific research center of the West Mediterranean region of Turkey. In the 2003-2004 academic year a total of 17,287 students attended the university, consisting of 6,943 pre-graduates, 9,037 bachelor degree students, and 1,307 post-graduates.
The University is a member of the European University Association and involved in international relations and projects such as Leonardo and Erasmus.
